Welcome to the Yoga Citizen

I’m Laura, a wife, mama of twins, and yogini for life here to provide mindful guidance on real-life situations through the lens of yoga. My mission is to spread the love of yoga, and all the goodness it brings, to help you tap into the strength you already have and live a life full of happiness, purpose and blissful savasana’s.

This space is for us to discuss how real life can be infused with the teachings of yoga. Let’s be honest, we can’t all sit in silence all day (mama has work to do!), but we can be intentional with how to put our best foot forward. We’ll dive into wellness, personal growth practices such as intention setting, and overall yogi lifestyle to equip you with the motivation to feel strong, healthy and happy.  Let’s peel back the lifetime of layers we’ve built up around ourselves and dive into what sparks our fire inside. I truly believe yoga has the ability to shed light on the work we need to do to live our best life today, and it all can start by taking a deep breath.

My Story

The truth is, I didn’t find yoga, Yoga has always found a way to find me, even when I kept trying to ignore it. Seriously not kidding. At the ripe ol‘ age of 24, I found myself drowning in a high-stress corporate job, poor health and crying every day simply because I was that unhappy. However, from the outside looking in, my life appeared great. I had a loving fiancé, close family and friends, and a promising career. But I had lost who I was at my core and could not believe the uncontrollable path my life had taken. My unhappiness was coming from me and what I was/wasn’t doing in my life.

One day during lunch with my mom, I told her all I wanted to do was quit my corporate job and become a yoga teacher, even though I had never taken a yoga class before! I craved simplicity and peace in my life, and something told me that yoga would slow my roller coaster life down. Promptly after that lunch, my mom bought me my first book on yoga and a few weeks later I left my stressful job.

You may have guessed that I did end up taking my first yoga class, and it was one for the books. I was like any other newbie to yoga, looking around at the weird postures we were doing and wondering if I was doing it right (you want my foot where?!?). And then at the end of class came the backbends followed by a savasana, and it all came flooding in. The valve to my internal waterworks burst at the seam. I couldn’t stop crying until well after we said “Namaste.” I sat there after everyone left gathering myself back together knowing, absolutely knowing, I had just unlocked something that had been buried for a long time.

10 years later, that first yoga class still inspires me today. It inspired me to take risks on my life choices, to clean up my lifestyle, and to surround myself with people who fill my heart. It inspired me to complete 2 teacher trainings and teach yoga for 9 years while working a full-time job. It has inspired me to create The Yoga Citizen to help us all live our real, busy, messy lives as best as we can.
